If you know your usual dress size, our handy comparison chart will help you select the right size James Jeans.

If you've bought other designer jeans in the past, try buying James Jeans one size smaller to achieve the same fit.

When you try your new jeans on, make sure they're as tight as you can bear them – they'll mould comfortably to your body once worn.

If you are buying black or white twill, you will probably need to go up a size as the fit is slightly snugger.

Measurements for the rise, hem opening and inseam are based on a size 26 jean. These are naturally graded on smaller and bigger sizes to ensure the perfect fit and proportion.

Knitwear Sizes

James Knits come in sizes S, M and L, which correspond to UK dress sizes 10, 12 and 14, respectively.

ABOUT US

Isaac’s love of handmade quality, precision and crafting are embodied in the flamboyant shirt range that carries his name. Using renowned English design and styling, together with traditional and modern sewing methods, Smart Tailor has created a quality shirt that can be worn day in day out.

These individual shirts (not only for that special occasion) are handmade and offer the wearer an individual style of their own.

By using plain and fancy fabric combinations you will definitely not go unnoticed, but will be seen to be wearing a quality garment and, above all, a sophisticated style of your own.

Made differently, sold differently and worn by those who are, well a little different.

As shirt makers our aim is simple: to supply top quality, contemporary English-designed shirts at sensible prices. All our shirts are exclusive, designed in house and handmade using only the finest materials. Attention to detail is paramount. They are conscientiously cut, sewn and finished in our specially selected factories, chosen for their ability to produce the highest quality work. The shirts are made in small batches with love and care.

Only these stylish icons bear our brand names: Isaac Kotlyarevsky and Smart Tailor.

Customers like our distinctive designs but above all it’s the experience of wearing these fashion garments that sets them apart.

Our shirts are only available through:

  • Our own website
  • A very limited number of approved retailers
  • Specially selected direct sales opportunities at offices and other convenient locations.

Our range changes regularly, so there are always new and exciting shirts for you to discover.

Smart Tailor is a small, privately-owned UK company originally launched in Asia in 2006, and then in the UK since 2009.

Joshua Kotlyarevsky and his family have brought back to life the quality and passion that was the tailoring of Isaac Kotlyarevsky.

His love for handmade quality, precision and crafting are embodied in both the Smart Tailor business shirt range and especially in the more flamboyant party range that carries Isaac’s name.

Using some sound English styling, together with traditional and modern sewing methods, Smart Tailor has created a quality shirt that can be worn day in day out.

These party shirts (for that special occasion) are also handmade but are more flamboyant, offering the wearer an individual style of their own.

By using plain and fancy fabric combinations the wearer will definitely not be missed, but will be seen to be wearing a quality garment and, above all, a sophisticated style of their own.

Made differently, sold differently and worn by those who are, well a little different.

SHIRT EXPERT

SIZE & FIT

SHIRT COLLAR SIZE
ALWAYS allow at least one finger to fit between your neck and the closed shirt collar if you intend to wear it closed.

FOUR FINGERS
ALWAYS fill your whisky glass with your favourite brand to four fingers!

MATERIALS

COTTON
All our shirts are made from cotton (except for some small areas of printed trim) with a variety of finishes. This makes for easier washing and ironing.

Cotton is grown in many countries around the world and the word cotton comes from an Arabic word ‘QUTN’. It is a soft fibre that grows as a ‘boll’ around the seeds of the cotton plant.

The fibre is spun into a yarn or thread and used to make a soft, natural fabric, which is the most widely used natural material in the clothing industry.

OTHER FABRICS
Apart from cotton we use different base fabrics mainly for printed trim where the colour needs to be well defined

BUTTONS
It is ‘NOT COOL’ to wear your top button done up without a tie – you won't look smart, you won’t look casual, you won't look semi-relaxed, you WILL look like Tom Hanks in FORREST GUMP!

BRANDED BUTTONS
Our Isaac Kotlyarevsky shirts use our exclusive branded buttons - a subtle touch.. Wear your shirt with pride but don’t advertise the fact. We sew our shirts for our customers, not for the advertising.

CONTRAST BUTTON STITCHING
Many of our shirts use contrasting thread colours to add to the overall look of the shirt and its individuality.

BUTTON ATTACHMENT
We use three or four hole buttons for security. They are attached using a lock-stitch method which means that they are sewn on in an ‘X‘ so that they do not fall off or offer a loose thread that can be pulled easily.

COLLARS
Every Isaac Kotlyarevsky collar has a different shape. Ours do not necessarily fit the ‘standard’ collar names.

BRANDED COLLAR STAYS/COLLAR STIFFENERS
All our shirts that have the facility for collar stays are delivered with our branded collar stays. These help to ensure a crisp collar appearance and avoid those washday blues of crumpled collars.
This is a VERY important piece of kit - remember to remove before washing, oh and to put back in. These will save you from embarrassing ‘Collar Droop’.

TWO-PIECE COLLAR
Our collars are cut and sewn with two separate pieces called the ‘Top’ and the ‘Band’. We cut them in a special way so that when they are sewn together they produce a slight ‘spring’ effect. This gives the collar a natural tendency both to turn and stay flat.

CUFF LINKS
Another important piece of kit as without these your Double/French cuffs will flap in the wind! Make sure that you take an extra pair when you travel!

HOW MANY COMPONENTS?
Did you know that a shirt can contain many separate ‘parts’ and a good quality one is complex to make. Our shirts are made with love and care using more individual components than most (excluding packaging).
One shirt can have between 48 & 51 individual components!

SEWING YOUR SHIRT
Our shirts are sewn by hand throughout. This is the traditional way but it’s a more expensive and slower way of doing it. It produces very fine and strong seams. Our shirts are made the best way possible a ‘ready-made’ shirt with the traditional hallmarks of a bespoke tailored shirt at High Street prices.

TWIN-STITCHED SEAMS
We use a traditional premium sewing method (twin stitching the arm hole and side seams) and matched it with a modern technical advance making the seams not only crisp and secure but also easing the chore of ironing at those important and easy to see points.

SPI
SPI is ‘stitches per inch’ and some people say that the more stitches you use on a shirt the better the shirt, but this is not quite true. Too many stitches and you can get puckered seams. The average is 14/15 SPI on the High Street however we use higher than average (up to 19) on all seams, taking care not to ‘over sew’ in key areas like side seams. The result: a finer, stronger and more elegant-looking seam.

FUSING
Collars, cuffs and plackets are all fused using a premium grade fusible, specially selected to achieve a perfect combination. Our fusible is continuously tested with a procedure called ‘peel testing’ to ensure optimal performance for the life of the shirt.

TWO-PIECE SPLIT YOKE
Our shirts usually offer a two-piece mitred yoke. This means that the yoke across the shoulders is constructed in two separate pieces allowing them to come together at an angle which is the same shape as a man’s shoulders. This helps to create a smooth neat line across the shoulders for a cleaner appearance and better fit. Simpler one-piece yoke shirts are not able to offer this.

HEM GUSSET
Many of our shirts are made with a small gusset at the base of the side seam. This is very strong but it also serves to contour the back tail shape of the shirt and ensures secure seams.

CARE OF YOUR SHIRT

We suggest the following:

  • Always remove collar stays before washing.
  • Machine wash your shirt using the correct instructions that you will find on the care label.
  • Never wash at more than 40 degrees.
  • It is always best to iron your shirt whilst it is slightly damp, as this makes ironing easier.
  • Moisten with a water spray if ironing your shirt from dry.
  • Never use starch or bleach.
  • Don't forget to replace your collar stays to keep your shirt looking its best.

FADING

Please note that pigment fabrics such as denim are designed to fade and to appear to be worn. As you wash and wear them they both fade and soften. This is not a fault but a key element of the look and feel.

BUTTON IMPRINTS

Stains and marks like button imprints can appear on soft fabrics (particularly white and light colours). Although we do our best to minimise this, it is sometimes unavoidable. It mainly happens when a warm button is packed against a white or light fabric. Should you find a shirt (particularly white or a light colour) which has what appears to be a mark from a button or other accessory please do not worry - it usually comes out in the first wash.

In fact, we always suggest that light-coloured shirts are laundered before the first wear. If a mark does not come out for any reason please return the shirt (using our returns system) and we will replace it.

Size Guide

Isaac Kotlyarevsky shirts are based on our TAILORED (shaped) fit and are in International sizes.

Our business shirts are a classic fit and are in UK sizes.

Our continuous tests have shown that very, very few customers will not be able to wear our shirts.

All shirt makers use different places to measure so it can be very confusing when a customer is offered a collar, a chest and a sleeve size as these can be different for each brand. We have used a method that has shown to produce a perfect fit shirt so we offer just a collar size.

We suggest that if you like your shirt with a little more room that you go up one size. Therefore someone taking a size 16.5 (42) may be more comfortable in an ‘XL’ than an ‘L’.

HOW AND WHERE TO MEASURE

Collar
Measuring your collar size is very easy. Take the tape measure and place it at the base of your neck at the point where a shirt collar would usually lay. Ensure that you are able to fit one finger between your neck and the collar, after all you need to be able to breathe.

Chest
Place the tape measure around your chest under the arms. Make sure that the tape is tight under your arms and is high on the back (not low). This should be making a level circle around your chest and should pass over the shoulder blades.

Sleeves
Place one end of the tape at the point where the neck meets the shoulder follow this over the top of your shoulder down to the point where the sleeve should end which is somewhere between 1cm - 3cm further down your hand than your natural cuff position.

We currently have one standard sleeve length. As we understand many people with longer sleeves and due to a number of requests we will be adding a longer sleeve length in the near future.

Waist
Simply measure around the natural waistline.

If you have a specific question on fit please email us on sales@smarttailor.co.uk and we will do our best to help you.

Q.

Do you have shirts for people with extra long or short arms?

A.

At the moment we only offer a tailored shirt and standard sleeve length. We do not offer a made to measure service. If you would like us to keep you informed when these are launched in the UK please email us on sales@smarttailor.co.uk .

Q.

Why don’t you offer made to measure?

A.

Made to measure relies on accurate measurements being taken and in most cases these are based on a base model with certain key measuring points altered. We do not believe that these shirts are really made to measure and will only offer a service when we are happy such a shirt would fit well. We are working on this. If you would be interested in us letting you know if we offer this service please email us on sales@smarttailor.co.uk meanwhile why not try one of our ready-made shirts, you will be pleasantly surprised!

NEWS

Our shirts have attracted quite a following including some TV personalities and celebrities like Gino D'Acampo, and members of the Royal Family (allegedly).

We’ve just received a great endorsement from socialite, presenter and fashionisto Emmanuel Ray, the 2011 winner of the Fashions Finest's prestigious “Fashion Icon Award” and author of the 'Diary of an It Boy' column which appears in 10 publications. Emmanuel loves our shirts and can be seen wearing them at fashion and celebrity parties. This is what he says:

“Every time I wear a shirt by Isaac Kotlyarevsky, I get many compliments. The collection of shirts is a visual treat and I love the range as it includes many different designs and styles, suitable for every occasion. But the best part is that even the simplest of shirts at Isaac Kotlyarevsky has something about them that makes them special, be it a slight touch of quirkiness or flamboyance.

They offer a combination of subtle flair and design whilst remaining wearable for all and at such keen prices.

They fit in somewhere between 'wild' and 'quality refined' so can be worn anywhere and at any time.

Their retro print shirts are a favourite of mine and I wear them all the time! The fabric is of good quality, the stitch and fit are perfect and the price is very reasonable. What's not to love?”
